First Baptist Church of Parishville, NY Doctrine
1. The Scriptures:
We believe that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments as originally written were verbally inspired the product of Spirit-controlled men and are therefore wholly without error. We believe the Bible is the supreme revelation of God’s will for man and is our only rule for all human conduct, creeds, and opinions.
(2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:19-21)
2. The True God:
We believe in one God, the creator of heaven and earth, manifesting Himself in three persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, equal in power and glory and executing distinct and harmonious offices in the great work of redemption.
(Exodus 20:2-3; 1 Corinthians 8:6)
3. The Holy Spirit:
We believe that the Holy Spirit is a divine person possessing all the attributes of personality and of deity. He is equal with the Father, and with the Son and is of the same nature. His relation to the unbelieving world is that He convicts of sin, righteousness, and judgment. His work among believers is that He seals, indwells, infills, guides and teaches the way of righteousness.
(John 14:16-26; Hebrews 9:14; Ephesians 1:13-14)
4. The Lord Jesus Christ:
We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary in a supernatural manner; He is very God of very God, being God manifest in the flesh; He lived a life of absolute sinlessness and in His death He made a full and vicarious atonement for our sins, dying not a martyr’s death, but as a voluntary substitute in the sinner’s place. He rose again from the death on the third day and ascended bodily into heaven. He is coming again to this world to establish His kingdom and to set up the throne of David. His coming will be personal and is imminent, pre-millenial and pre-tribulational.
(Isaiah 7:14; John 1:1; 1 Peter 3:18; Matthew 28:6; Acts 15:16; Matthew 1:18-25; 1 Thessalonians 4:16)
5. Man:
We believe the Scriptures teach that man was created by God in innocence but by voluntary transgression he fell from his sinless state in consequence of which all men are now sinners not by constraint but by choice and therefore under just condemnation to eternal ruin without defense or excuse.
(Genesis 1:27; Romans 5:12-14; Isaiah 53:6; Romans 3:23)
6. Salvation:
We believe the Scriptures teach that salvation of sinners is wholly of grace through the mediatorial work of the Son of God; It is wholly apart from workds and is upon the sole condition of repentance and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; That in order to be saved the sinner must be born again, being regenerated by the power of the Holy Spirit and becoming the recipient of a new nature; that the great gospel blessing which Christ secures to such as believe in Him is justification which includes pardon of sin and the impartation of divine righteousness solely through faith in the Redeemer’s blood; That having exercised faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, the believer is completely justified and is in possession of salvation which is eternally secure.
(Ephesians 2:8-9; 2 Peter 1:4; John 10:28-29; John 3:3-6; Acts 13:39)
7. The Church:
We believe the Scriptures teach that the church of Jesus Christ must be considered in two aspects, visible and invisible. The visible church is a congregation of baptized born again believers, associated by covenant in the faith and fellowship of the Gospel, observing the ordinances of Christ, governed by His laws, and exercising the gifts, rights, and privileges invested in them by His Word; that its Scriptural offices are: bishops or pastors and deacons; qualifications, claims, and duties are defined in the epistles to Timothy and Titus; Matthew 28:15-20; Acts 2:41-42. The invisible church is the entire company of believers in Christ whether Jew or Gentile, who, regardless of denominational affiliation and present position in Heaven or on Earth, are members of the Body of Christ which is His church universal.
(Ephesians 1:22-23; Hebrews 12:23)
8. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper:
We believe that the Scriptures teach that Christian baptism is the immersion in water of a believer to show forth in a solemn and beautiful emblem, our faith in the crucified, buried, risen Saviour, with its effect in our death to sin and resurrection to a new life; that it is a prerequisite to the privileges of a church relationship.
We believe that the Lord’s Supper is the commemoration of His death until He comes and should be preceded always by solemn self-examination.
(Acts 8:36-39; 1 Corinthians 11:23-28; Romans 6:3-5)
9. The Eternal State:
We believe the Scriptures teach that all those who through faith are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ will spend eternity in full enjoyment of God’s presence and that those who through impenitence and unbelief refuse to accept God’s offer of mercy will spend eternity in everlasting punishment.
(Psalm 16:11; Matthew 24:46; John 14:2)
10. Satan:
We believe the Scriptures teach that there is a personal devil who is the “god of this age, the prince of the power of the air” who is full of all subtlety, who seeks continually to frustrate the purposes of God and to ensnare the sons of men.
(Ephesians 2:2; Revelation 12:9; 2 Corinthians 4:4; 2 Corinthians 11:13-15)
11. The Position of the Church:
We believe the Scriptures teach, throughout, the doctrine of separation from apostasy and false teaching, both personally and organically. Thus, we believe that toleration of or cooperation and fellowship with apostasy poses a breach of God’s command.
(2 Corinthians 6:14-15; 2 John 9-11; 2 Timothy 6:3-5; 2 Thessalonians 3:6; 2 Timothy 3:5)
